Journal:

I was in the same dorm as all of the kids and suffice to say, it was not a great night, made worse by the fact that I had a top bunk on which I had to keep all of my gear including my pack (because there was literally nowhere on the floor to put it).  This made a narrow top bunk, with no sides, even narrower, and I was a bit worried about rolling off during the night.

Because I had a short day, I didn't rush the start, and took advantage of the breakfast options on offer from the friendly staff to include muesli and ham and eggs for a change.  Even without rushing, I was hiking by 8:15am on a very cool morning, still in my t-shirt and shorts, though I noticed others rugging up, including gloves.

It was nice to get on the peaceful trail, and I was soon enjoying a couple of hours following a rocky path along the bottom of a valley dominated by rocky crags and steep scree slopes with the occasional deep green lake.  Although the trail was quite difficult walking, the scenery more than made up for it as I ambled along, catching a few of the early starters.

I reached the Koca pri Triglavskih Hut, situated on another beautiful lake, soon after 10am and treated myself to a Pepsi and snack.  From there it was just two more hours of walking through limestone country, with lots of sink-holes, to reach the Dom na Komni hut where I arrived at about 12:30pm.  I ordered some spaghetti for lunch while deciding whether to walk further in the afternoon.  To do so would have meant detouring some distance off the Via Alpina to get accommodation.  However, if I stayed put, there was an 8-10 hour walk tomorrow which notes from other hikers in the guide-book described as too far and too dangerous to do in one day.  In the end, I stayed put, figuring I was hiking further and faster than most other hikers I have met.  The hut is modern and big and I got a tiny room to myself (shared facilities) and had plenty of time to have a shower and wash out my clothes before spending a relaxing afternoon.  I even found that they had an unsecured wireless LAN so could catch up on diary and email.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is not good with a 90% chance of rain and thunderstorms forecast.  I can't afford to wait for the weather to clear, so have mapped out some alternative, lower, routes in case of storms and low visibility.
