After dinner last night I spent some time looking at my schedule
for the balance of my hike and found I am well ahead of schedule.
Given that, and the Euro Football final is on TV tonight, I decided
to ask at breakfast whether it would be possible to stay an
additional night. The nice owners obliged and some Swedish
guests suggested that, if I was staying, I should go up to
Lanersbach, the next village up the valley, and see the big
traditional Austrian folk festival that was on today. The
proprietors then produced a program and a free bus pass.
So,
on a very warm and sunny day, I caught the bus up the valley, had a
wander around the touristy but very pretty Lanersbach, and then
watched the parade involving 1200 people wearing traditional
Austrian garb. They closed the only road through the valley
for two hours for the parade. The parade was made up of groups
from villages and towns all over the Tyrol, wearing their specific
traditional garb and often carrying implements for agriculture and
defence. A number of groups towed wooden cannons dating back
more than 100 years and I saw some old women carrying very
lethal-looking spiked clubs.
It was a very festive occasion
with lots of whoops, yodels, leather shorts, beer, schnapps, bands
and piano accordions, and good-natured banter between those in the
parade and the onlookers. One female onlooker near me made
some comment to a group and they swung their cannon round to point
at her which generated a lot of merriment all round.
After
the parade I bought some traditional Austrian food for lunch
(Krapfen - deep-fried cheese) and sat in the shade listening to a
Tyrolean group play and reading the Weekend Financial Times which I
found in the supermarket this morning. Very pleasant. It
was so nice, I even caught myself thinking it would be nice to go
for a walk a few times!
I returned to the hotel around 2:30pm
and did some extra washing and watched the Tour de France and the
European Athletics Champs on TV for the balance of the afternoon.
